AMI x Magnum

F.AMI.LY

Magnum Photos teamed up with Parisian fashion brand AMI for an extraordinary collaboration. 13 photographers as well as two invited video artists were given "carte blanche" to interpret the theme of family through photography and video. The work is exhibited in Paris, Miami, Shanghai and Kyoto along a book published by Flammarion with a preface from Leila Slimani and distributed internationally.

Alessandra Sanguinetti & Jim Goldberg

Gold/Mine

"Since we moved to a farm five years ago, our sheep, goats, chickens, cat, dogs, and donkeys have become part of our family as well. Like all families, our life together is complicated and challenging, but love overrules it all and we have finally made a world for ourselves that we can truly call home. It’s sentimental, but true…"

Bruce Gilden

Bikelife

"Even though I’m not a biker, they have always greeted and welcomed me. After all these months with them, I feel that I have my own place in this extended family."

Alec & Carmen Soth

Take Your Daughter To The Road

"Now nineteen, Carmen is about to venture out on her own road. She has no intention to be a professional photographer, but I nonetheless wanted to give her an old 35mm just like my father gave me. We took a trip with the premise that I’d teach her about F-stops and shutter speeds. But my real purpose was to travel beside her with my camera one last time."

Sabiha Çimen

Transfiguration

"With this series of photographs, I wanted to portray the warmth that I felt as a child and which I carried into my adult life, understanding the intrinsic value of things and continuing the tradition in which I was raised. Like the loaves of bread that I remember when l was a child, from which my grandmother pressed a piece of chewed, wet bread on my bloody wound."

Yael Martinez

The skin of my land

"The skin of my land, the skin of my people is sown in my navel and in the palm of my hand, it is found on the horizons that my family has marked in me; I think of the time that is not time, of the red line that extends over us, of the blood that unites us; the aroma of my house surrounds me and a sensation tightens my chest, my breath. The first time I lost someone I loved, a fire burned inside me and I could see the reflection of the flames in my mother’s eyes."

Alex Majoli

Scene of Kanun

"According to the Kanun, women have very few rights. They are considered as property and their role in life is to produce children. Some choose to become sworn virgins (burrnesha) before a Council of tribal elders, promising to remain celibate and take on a male role. They dress as men, take male names, carry guns, smoke, become the head of their household, and carry out male work."

Bieke Depoorter

For/With

"I don’t often photograph the people that are truly close to me. I feel ashamed to take out my camera out around them. I think I am afraid to kill the moment. This might sound strange coming from a photographer, I know. But there are a few rare moments I do photograph. These are mostly images I would not show or even look at again."

Antoine d'Agata

Sang

"Is Kiev deserted? Be careful! Anger, silence. We go around. I’m not sure who to blame. You, me? / Bitterness, loneliness, distrust. Regret. / I deal with it. I do without. / I have always collected. Automatic replies in case of absence."

Correspondence. Kharkiv–Paris, March 2022, Dilan d’Agata

Nanna Heitmann

The Clown: A Short Story

"On a tiny island, in the attic of a small wooden house, lives a lonely man. No one knows his real name, so they call him Mr. Lonely Clown."

Cristina de Middel

Endogamia

"National galleries organize their portraits by family, whether these are royal or gremial, creating labelled communities on the scale of a room that the public visits, understanding and assuming their connection [...] Using multiple exposures and layering the portraits that cohabit in these rooms into a single image, the series Endogamia draws on the notion that some scientists had in the beginning of the nineteenth century that facial traits reflect certain psychological conditions"

Lindokuhle Sobekwa

uMthimkhulu III

"Umthimkhulu is my ancestral clan name. The direct translation is “the big tree.” Trees are very important in my culture; they connect us deeply to our identity and history. The need to create my own family tree came from visiting my ancestral home and learning about these cultural connections to trees in relation to a personal family history of migration."

Hiroji Kubota

These are my family

"I love photography and I feel lucky to have been able to do so much and meet so many wonderful people. As I look back at the contact sheets today, I can re-live these moments. I realize that these sheets, with all the moments and memories of what I have done, are also my family."
