Fujifilm partners anew with Magnum, commissioning four photographers to develop a new series around the theme of "Connection." Each photographer approaches this universal and open theme in a personal and artistic manner while remaining true to the codes of documentary photography.
Curated by Philipp Ebeling and presented at Arles during the Rencontres photographiques, the exhibition sees Carolyn Drake, Lorenzo Meloni, Lua Ribeira, and Peter van Agtmael explore the theme of "Connection," each through a series of new work created using the Fujifilm GFX100 II camera.
Carolyn Drake
Carolyn Drake continues her project "Glorify Yourself," in which she interacts with a best-selling American self-help book for women from the 1950s. Her playful yet disturbing images draw attention to the system of desires and delusions that still hold a grip on socio-political structures in her country.
Lorenzo Meloni
Lorenzo Meloni pursues his ongoing project, Revelation, which explores the current "state of crises" where economic, environmental, and social challenges intersect. This work examines the ecological consequences of unsustainable practices and the technological innovations proposed as solutions.
Lúa Ribeira
Lúa Ribeira, having recently become a mother for the first time, decided to put her baby in the picture, like so many mothers before her. However, in her series “The Carers” she subverts the classic baby photo set-up and common urges of all new mothers by entrusting her charge to complete strangers met in the streets and parks of Bristol. The resulting images question her role as a mother and her own natural instinct to shield her baby from those strangers.
Peter van Agtmael
Peter van Agtmael is embarking on a new body of work in France. Having followed his wife back to her homeland, he is acutely feeling a sense of alienation and displacement. For the first time in two decades working as a photojournalist he is forging new connections away from conflict and his country in an effort to create a new home.
Live Lab Commission
During the opening week of the photography festival in Arles, Fujifilm and Magnum expanded on the theme of “Connection” through a unique live commission experience. Photographers were invited to continue their series in and around Arles, while Carolyn Drake worked in her reconstructed studio. This initiative offered the public the opportunity to engage with the artists during editing sessions, providing an exclusive insight into their creative process. The photographs taken in Arles further enriched the group exhibition.
