Polaroid

To celebrate the launch of their new camera I-2 Polaroid commissioned Newsha Tavakolian, Enri Canaj and Jim Goldberg to create a new body of work. The thirty images produced will be used to create assets to launch an open call, inviting photographers around the world to respond to the theme:" The Next Imperfectionist".

The three Magnum photographers will select ten winners to participate in a masterclass and produce a new body of work using the I-2 camera. The final images will be presented in a collective online exhibition on Polaroid platforms.

Jim Goldberg

Jim Goldberg explained the importance of identity and representation through photography, a concept central to his work. He highlights how photographs offer only partial representations of individuals, raising questions about personal identity, dreams, and experiences. Goldberg emphasizes that writing and drawing on photographs transforms them into unique artistic expressions, almost like miniature paintings. His approach explores the interplay between visual imagery and personal narratives, underscoring the significance of storytelling through visual art.

Newsha Tavakolian

Newsha Tavakolian explained the importance of storytelling through photography, a form of expression that is dear to her. She highlights the need to depict human resilience in the face of adversity, convinced that art and culture can build bridges between people. She also emphasizes that imperfection is part of the creative process and that exposing negative aspects, both figuratively and literally, helps create deeper connections and opens up new perspectives.

Enri Canaj

Enri Canaj explained his personal journey of self-discovery through photography, particularly in Albania. He emphasized the significance of using black and white photography to evoke childhood memories and capture emotions rather than just producing mechanical images. Canaj highlighted the unique and democratic nature of the photographic process, focusing on the element of surprise that arises from not controlling every aspect of creation. He expressed a desire to convey feelings and fantasies through his work, suggesting that this approach allows for a deeper connection to the subject matter.

"Real Life Is Not Black and White"

As part of Paris Photo 2024, Polaroid and Magnum are presenting the exhibition "Real Life Is Not Black and White". This collaboration marks a first between the two photography institutions, combining Polaroid's spontaneity with Magnum Photos' photojournalism. The exhibition highlights the work of 10 photographers who won the Polaroid x Magnum Photos competition.
